In the winter of 1999, singer / board member / ASL signer and highly talented artist extraordinaire (both musical and graphic), Susan Leviton invited and challenged the chorus to learn two tunes in Yiddish and sing backup on her CD, Zingendik! Susan has been researching Yiddish songs (particularly women's music of the turn of the last century, and music of the Holocaust) for 20 years. The CD is a project of the Harrisburg-based Institute for Cultural Partnerships (telephone 717-238-1770). Susan can be reached by email at gorelev@aol.com.
We did it! We sang the haunting Ich Un Di Velt (The World and I), and Arbeter Froyen (Working Women), an anthem of the early twentieth century women's labor movement. (NOTE: You'll find more about Arbeter Froyen, and the lyrics, in the program notes for our concert, Silent No More!)
